It is time for a little flashback. It’s been way too long. During the Easter weekend we went to a place that I enjoyed so much, that I still feel like writing about it almost two months later. We went to PortAventura and I LOVED IT. I think I more than loved it. It is such a pretty, exciting and happy place and I already know that I am going back there. Okay, maybe I am a little bit too excited about this, but I just have a thing for amusement parks. Yes, that is what I am talking about, PortAventura is an amusement park.
The park is located near Salou, in the province of Tarragona, about an hour and fifteen minutes by train from Barcelona-Sants. From our home it is about three hours by train, so that is why we left at 7:30 in the morning. I seem like a terrible person for making my boyfriend wake up so early on a Saturday, but I just couldn´t waste any time. In the end we got their around 11:30 and as we had to check in in the hotel, yes we stayed for a night (!!!), we entered the park around 12:30.
And, as soon as we entered, I changed. I wasn´t even trying to be like a ´grown-up´ 22 year old woman, nope, I was just acting like a 10 year younger version of me. (This post is probably written like that, too.) Oh, my poor boyfriend. I more or less sprinted from rollercoaster to waterride. No, just kidding, but I did try to do as much as possible. First, we went to a recently built ride; ´Angkor´, it is so much fun, you are basically shooting water at strangers and they shoot back at you and you get out completely soaked. It is perfect for the warm summer days in Salou, maybe a bit less perfect for a spring day in the beginning of April. However, we dried up quite fast, thanks to one of the most breath taking rollercoasters I have ever been on: the Shambhala. Wow, just wow. It is supposed to replicate a Himalayah experience and I think it comes pretty close to that. It is 76m high, which makes it the highest rollercoaster in Europe and it goes so fast, unbelievable. This was the first time that I actually was really scared to fall out of the seat, but this can be blamed on the way you are secured. It is super safe, trust me, but because you are only fastened around your hips, you feel really free and when you go down, you really have the feeling you could fly away. Of course this didn´t happen, but I freaked out. Yes. And, the best part of it is that every seat has a camera, so afterwards we could see how much we enjoyed it. Embarrassing.
After that, I must admit, I calmed down a little bit. I was in shock I guess. So, we decided to take it a bit slower, have lunch and enjoy the lovely surroundings. PortAventura is made up of six theme areas and every part is really well decorated. The themes are The Far West, Mexico, Mediterranean, Polynesia, China and Sesame Street and in every part of the park you really have the feeling you are in a different world. Sesame Street is a great place for little children, in the Mediterranean you can have delicious food and in the Far West you can see lovely saloon shows. Ok, I could go on like this for an hour, but I think it’s better you just take a look at the pictures.
After a pretty exhausting first day, it was time to go to the hotel, which was located on a five minute walking distance from the entrance. We stayed in the Costa Caribe resort and it was really cute. They try to make you feel like you are in the Caribbean and they do a pretty good job. The resort has some restaurants, a spa and a loungebar where you can really relax after running around all day. If it had been a bit warmer, I am pretty sure I would have taken a swim.
After a night of good sleep and a big breakfast, we were ready for another day at the park! We more or less saw the entire park again and did some things we didn´t have time for on Saturday. We had lunch in a nice tapas restaurant in the Mediterranean and afterwards we decided to go on the Furius Baco. Let´s say that maybe we should have had lunch after that, because this rollercoaster is really IMPRESSIVE. You go from 0 to 135 Km/hour in 3,5 seconds. I´ve never felt such a power and during those first seconds a picture was taken, but I promise you, it is better that you don´t see that one.
At the end of the day there was a really nice parade guiding the visitors to the exit. This parade takes place every night during this summer, as the park celebrates its 20th birthday this year! So, the park is actually quite young and I think that they built a pretty beautiful and exciting park in these years! It is really worth a visit if you are ever on a holiday close to Barcelona!!
One last thing though, if you take the train to PortAventura, make sure you also buy the ticket for the way back, because the train station of PortAventura doesn´t have a ticket machine. So, we were bad people and we took the train without buying one and then of course somebody came to check our ticket. Ha. He offered us to pay in cash, but we only had our card, so we got kicked out of the train. A not so lovely ending of a very lovely weekend!
